Incredible Tutor™ Geek Peek
|
| |
|
As teachers know, student
abilities within one classroom will vary greatly. This
means that some students may need to work on a different
grade level of Incredible Tutor™ than others in the class. Since Incredible
Tutor™ is a student’s personal test-prep partner, he can
do exactly that without his classmates knowing.
You
can mask which grade level a student is working on in Incredible
Tutor™ by changing the grade level to an alternate name
that the software provides. These alternate names are based on the names
of colors.
For instance, if your 5th graders are in the computer lab and one student
needs to work on 3rd grade tutorial sessions, you can change the grade
levels to alternate names. The title of the 5th grade lessons would become
YELLOW instead of 5TH GRADE, while the 3rd grade lessons would be called
ORANGE.
When the student working on the 3rd grade material chooses his Incredible
Tutor™ task, all that his classmates would know is that
he’s
working on ORANGE. They wouldn’t know what grade level this represents.
This way, no one is embarrassed by a grade level lower than the others’ showing
up in plain sight.
To utilize this valuable tool, simply go to your Global Preferences (log
in using the teacher password and click on “Set IT! Up” on
the left). From the bottom list (“On or Off Preferences”)
choose "Use Alternate Title Name." Click in the blank space
between the “T” and the words “Use Alternate Title
Name” until a dot appears. Hit “Save” and color names
will appear!

Recipe:
Fourth of July Fried Chicken |
Darla Denton, a teacher from St. Louis, MO, submitted
this unique recipe. Darla told us that her
family has a 4th of July picnic tradition and she always
brings this fried chicken.
Darla told us,“My son loves the drumsticks so sometimes
I will make this recipe using only drumsticks!”
INGREDIENTS:
8-10 pieces of chicken
1 can condensed cream of chicken soup
2 eggs
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
Garlic salt (to taste)
Oil for frying
DIRECTIONS:
|
| |
|
In
a bowl combine the condensed soup, eggs and garlic salt (Don’t
add too much salt; remember, the soup is already salted!). |
|
|
2. |
Dip
the chicken pieces in this mixture, turning and coating them
completely. Let them soak in this mixture until Step 4. |
|
|
3. |
In
a big, re-sealable plastic bag mix together the flour, cornstarch,
pepper, oregano, and garlic salt. |
|
|
4. |
One
at a time, place the chicken pieces in the bag, seal it,
and shake it to coat the chicken. |
|
|
5. |
Put
these coated pieces of chicken aside and allow them to sit until
they become “doughy” (this is really important because
it makes them crispier when you fry them). |
|
|
6. |
Add
enough oil to a deep skillet to cover the chicken while you’re
frying it. |
|
|
7. |
Heat
the oil over medium heat. Test to make sure it’s hot enough
for cooking by taking a piece of the “dough” and
dropping it into the hot oil. If it starts to fry immediately
then your oil is ready. |
|
|
8. |
Fry
the chicken pieces for 8 to 10 minutes each, or until the juices
that come out are no longer dark. |

What is your favorite part about what you do at Sleek Corporation?
I like the ability to do widely-varying jobs from helping customers,
to keeping the office running smoothly, to writing and editing some
of our eNews articles.
What do like most about how Incredible
Tutor™ helps
students?
Standardized tests, like the TAKS and the FCAT, have become
such an important element of the students’ education that an individual’s
success or failure can easily become confused with that child’s
self-worth. When Incredible Tutor™ helps students feel more confident
and do better on the test, then they feel better about themselves.
What do you do in your spare time?
For indoor activities, I love reading and knitting (I’m
currently working on superhero capes for my two boys). I also
like getting outside and enjoy hiking and camping with my sons.
What do you think is one of the greatest challenges facing
our young people today?
School has become much more serious and challenging for students
from a very young age. My kindergarten (half) days were filled
with art projects and friendship-building, but my son’s
experience has been much more intense. Our children work much
harder now throughout their school careers, so finding a balance
between work and relaxation for the students and their families
has become increasingly more difficult. I worry that these
kids will experience burnout before they even begin their lives.
What is one of your favorite books and why?
My all-time favorite book is The Poisonwood
Bible. Through a portrait
of a family of missionaries in the Congo, Barbara Kingsolver
illustrates the transformation of the characters as they are
forced to face their humanity. The beauty of her words and
the deep characterization captivate me. I forget I’m
reading about imaginary people and begin to think about my
own place in the universe.
