Studying the Civil War:
Integrating with Technology Donna
Thomas from Kountze Middle School in Kountze, Texas has shared a great tip on how she collaborates with
other teachers to help students learn Civil War related material for
the TAKS test.
Donna writes, "I would love to share an integration tip for US History
and Technology. The 8th grade US History teacher and I (Tech. Apps. Teacher)
work together on a Civil War project prior to TAKS in which pairs of
students work on a specific topic.
The pairs of students then create a web page with contrasting viewpoints.
One student presents the Southern view, while another student presents
the Northern view. The students do all the research themselves on the
Internet, and then use their technology skills to create a dynamite presentation
with active links, bibliography, pictures, and more.
We are still new to this, but last year it was very effective for the
students to discover answers on their own.” [EDITOR’S NOTE: You can extend your integration
of US History and Technology when you use Incredible
Tutor™ Social
Studies for grades 6-11.]

10
Ways Students Can Improve Their Writing |
| |
Jot
down the single most important point you’re trying to make. Keep
this in sight so you can refer to it and to keep yourself on track
as you write. |
| |
2. |
Make
a list. Create a list of things that “back up” the
single most important point you’re trying to make. |
3. |
Begin
by making a picture in your mind. Close your eyes and visualize
what you want to say and write the very first sentence that comes to
your mind. |
4. |
Act
like a reporter. Make sure you tell the reader who, when,
what, why, and how. |
5. |
Compare
and contrast. Comparing and contrasting one thing to another
is an easy way to make your writing more interesting. |
6. |
Use
the active voice. The active voice “wakes up” your
writing and makes it more interesting. |
7. |
Use
paragraphs. Not only will this help you organize your thoughts,
but it will help the reader understand them. |
8. |
Word
choice. Did you use the same word(s) over and over again?
Be on the lookout for this when you proofread. |
9. |
Introduction
and conclusion. Do both your introduction and conclusion include
that single most important point that you jotted down in #1 above? |
10. |
Read
it “aloud” to yourself. When you proofread your
writing during a test, pretend like you’re reading it aloud and “hear” yourself.
This will help determine if the words flow well. |

helps students implement the tips above and encourages use of student

Recipe:
Turmeric Macaroni Salad
Submitted by Patricia Lavender from
Big Sandy Elementary in Big Sandy, Texas
“This salad is quick to make and is a wonderful complement
to many main dishes. We keep a bowl in the refrigerator and have
it several days—which means less cooking of side dishes.”
Ingredients:
1 pound spiral macaroni
1 cup diced celery
1 cup diced onion
1 pint mayonnaise
1 cup water
1/2 cup vinegar
1 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon salt
Directions:
Cook the spiral macaroni according to package directions. Drain well
and rinse with cool water.
While the macaroni is cooking, dice the celery and onion. Mix together
the mayonnaise, water, vinegar, sugar, turmeric, and salt. Stir in the
celery and onions.
Pour this mixture over cooked macaroni and store overnight in a covered
dish.
