Featured Employee – Mike Combs

Mike Combs is one of our Account Specialists here at Sleek Corporation. He brings his own unique brand of energy to our team and his personality is a hit with customers and his co-workers!

We asked him some questions and had some fun listening to his answers:

What is your favorite part about what you do at Sleek Corporation?

How do you pick one favorite part? Every day here is an adventure, always bringing me the chance to talk with new people.

What do like most about how Incredible Tutor™ helps students?

I like how it really relieves anxiety for kids. For a lot of kids the worst part about tests like the TAKS test isn’t taking them, it’s worrying about them beforehand.

What do you do in your spare time?

When I’m not at work I can be found working out or playing my bass guitar in what is sure to be the greatest rock band of our time.

What do you think is one of the greatest challenges facing kids in school today?

Everything is a challenge for kids today. For instance, trying to balance school, extracurricular activities, and fun. Not to mention being completely socially awkward all through high school. Maybe that was just me?

What is one of your favorite movies and why?

Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. This thrilling romp through history was not only entertaining but was also at times heartwarming and the lessons it teaches still stick with me today. For example, “Be excellent to each other.”

Do you have any pets?

Yes, I have a cat and I actually admire her! Not only can she sleep for days on end, but she can also jump onto the kitchen counter in one giant leap. She can see in the dark and she is much cleaner than my roommates. And unlike many people I know, she is easily contented. She’s happy just being scratched behind the ear and offered an occasional bite of a tuna fish sandwich.

10 Quick Facts about Energy

1.

There are two basic types of energy. These are kinetic energy and potential energy.

2.

Kinetic energy is energy in motion. Flowing water, heat, and light are all examples of kinetic energy.

3.

Potential energy is stored energy. A great example of potential energy is batteries. Electrical energy is stored in batteries for future use.

4.

There are two basic laws of energy. These two basic laws are called thermodynamics.

5.

There are two main laws of thermodynamics. There is the First Law of Thermodynamics and the Second Law of Thermodynamics.

6.

The First Law of Thermodynamics says that energy under normal conditions cannot be created or destroyed. Instead, energy can only be transformed from one type of energy to another.

7.

The Second Law of Thermodynamics is a bit more complex than the first law. Simply put it sets forth that anytime any energy is expended some of that energy will be lost as heat.

8.

Since some energy will always be lost as heat, it’s not possible for energy to be used with 100% efficiency. This is one of the implications of the Second Law of Thermodynamics.

9.

Living systems will break down unless they receive more energy. This is another implication of the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Since something will always be lost, the system has to be replenished or it cannot continue to expend energy.

10.

The Second Law of Thermodynamics is sometimes called “The Law of Entropy.” Entropy looks at how energy gets moved around during a process and how much of it gets moved around.

Recipe:
Sugar-Coated Pecans

Jose Gonzales, from Bastrop, Texas submitted this recipe.

Jose told us, “Growing up, we had tons of pecan trees on our property so we ate lots of pecans. This recipe always made all the hard work we putting into shelling them worthwhile.”

Ingredients:
1 pound pecans (shelled and halved)
1 egg white
1 tablespoon water
1 cup granulated sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees.

2. In a bowl, mix together the egg white and water until they are frothy.

3. In another bowl, mix together the sugar, salt, and cinnamon.

4. Add the pecans to the egg whites and stir to coat them evenly.

5. Next, take the pecans and toss them in the sugar mixture until coated.

6. Spread the coated pecans on a greased cookie sheet.

7. Bake at 250 degrees for one hour, being careful to stir them every 15 minutes.
